Awarded Grants
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has received grants totaling $115,000.00 for their Neuro-Oncology research program. The director of the Neuro-Oncology research program is Peter C. Phillips, M.D., a leading researcher in pediatric brain tumors. Dr. Phillips holds the Hubert J.P. and Anne Faulkner Schoemaker Endowed Chair in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology. His research focuses on new strategies for treating brain tumors, ranging from investigating new drugs to exploring gene therapy.
Dr. Phillips’ laboratory has identified new brain tumor treatment strategies with recombinant toxins, cell cycle growth inhibitors, cell signaling inhibitors, and vitamin D derivatives. His team is also developing molecular tools to predict the clinical behavior of medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumor, at the time of diagnosis.
Additionally, Dr. Phillips is investigating new drugs that could prove toxic to tumors and others that inhibit the formation of blood vessels that feed the tumors. He is also researching ways to combat drug resistance. Beyond pharmaceuticals, he is exploring new radiosurgery techniques, in which tissue is destroyed with radiation rather than physically excised.
